Murray County Central strives for healthy snacks at school. Smart Snacks =Brain Power!
Last year, West Elementary introduced a Smart Snack break for kindergarten through 6th grade students. Thanks to our wonderful parents, generous grantors such as The United Way and Monogram Meats, as well as support from the community, this program has continued into our 2017/2018 school year.
Studies have shown that when chosen properly, snacks can provide children with an extra boost to their mental skills, cognition and academic performance. Teachers and students at MCC have already noticed the positive impact that the healthy snack program has provided. Smart Snack breaks also provided time to promote peer interaction, practice for polite table manners and a time to learn about healthy snacking. For these reasons, the snack times focus on healthy food such as whole grain crackers, granola bars; fresh fruit, baby carrots, pretzels, yogurt and cheese sticks.
Below is a list of information and suggested guidelines for the Smart Snack Program.
• Snacks will be available mid-morning or mid-afternoon to students as part of their classroom
time
• Mini fridges are available in the classrooms to accommodate small refrigerated snacks
• Water will be available during the snack
• We ask that no peanut products, candy, cakes, or greasy food be brought in.
• Snacks will be eaten in the classroom so healthy items with minimal cleanup, such as finger
foods, are best!
The goal of the Smart Snack program is to promote structured eating habits, encourage healthy lifestyles and increase academic performance. Thank you to all the parents who have donated healthy snacks to the MCC classrooms!
