In reflecting on the first few weeks of school, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride to be a part of such a great school district and community. Murray County Central has a lot of positive momentum as we enter another year. One positive is our district’s test scores. The fact that our district met its goals for academic achievement and that we rank 28th in Minnesota when it comes to proficiency on our state assessments, says a lot about the hard work of our teachers, students, and ultimately our families reinforcing and supporting the instruction happening at school. The accountability provided by parents at home is often the hinge point for student success. When families support the programs and instruction happening at school by reinforcing it at home, this sends a clear and consistent message to our students. We need parent support to help students realize their maximum potential.
Another positive for MCC is the passing of our building bond/referendum. Our community came through and has shown their commitment to continue moving our district forward. The addition of a new gym facility will provide more space for our physical education classes as well as allow for reasonable practice times for our sports teams. We will also have opportunities to host both competition and community events. This facility will be of great benefit to our district.
The generous support of Minnwest Bank has increased the technology available to our students by providing funding for the purchase of 4 mobile computer labs. Students will now have more opportunities in the classroom as teachers maximize learning through the enrichment and enhancement of their curriculum. Additional technology in the classrooms also promotes opportunities for collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity (4Cs) which are vital 21st Century learning skills helping students prepare for life after high school.
Murray County Central recently received a $10,000 grant from the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education Grant through the Monsanto Fund. This grant was made possible by the nominations of local farmers. Our district would not have been able to apply if it had not been for their thoughtfulness. This grant will be used to start a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) based engineering class. The goal of starting this program is to provide opportunity and exposure for students to an ever growing field.
The icing on the cake for this year came two weeks ago when I received word that we were awarded another grant for 2,000 from Dupont Pioneer to enhance the curriculum in our Ag, Shop, Woods, and Welding classes through the purchase of a CNC Plasma Cutting table. This tool will provide real world, hands on experience for our students that will be directly applicable to many different working environments. This grant was again made possible by the thoughtfulness of our local farmers who recommended us for this opportunity.
As we move forward this year, I want you to know that I look forward to working with our community to help make our schools the best place they can be. It truly takes all of us working together to help develop the potential in every student. Thank you for your support.
